I've never been quite so scared in my life.

I was in the attic looking for one more Easter basket that I had not been able to find. Our attic has a door from Emma's room, but it also has a pull-down trap door with stairs into the garage. Evan had followed me in from Emma's room, and I took him back out....."Don't come in the attic, Evan. It is too dangerous!". I went back into the attic and was in a corner digging. I did not see him come back in. When I heard the "Thud", I immediately knew what had happened. Evan had come back into the attic and had stepped on the edge of the trap door. It opened, and he fell through into the garage. God was looking out for us though....my van happened to be parked in just the right spot, so luckily he fell onto the hood of the van and not onto the concrete floor!

Regardless, I was scared to death. Emma and I both started screaming for Jeff who was in the kitchen. I looked down and saw Evan on the van, laying on his back, but his arms and legs were moving. Jeff got to him seconds later and he had rolled over to his tummy. I came running down stairs as Jeff was carrying him inside. Evan was not crying at all--his first words were "I need headache medicine!" From that, we knew that he had hit his head. There was a red mark on the back of his head, but no bump or whelp. We decided immediately to take him to the ER to have him checked out.

We loaded everyone in the van and dropped Emma, Ethan, & Adam off at TaTa's house on the way. We were almost to the hospital when Evan said, "Where's Bubba Adam?" (He is not used to being away from Adam!). We told him he was at TaTa's house. He replied, "I need him!"

When we got to the ER and I told the triage nurse what had happened, she told me to hold his neck still. (I had not even thought about his neck....I was more worried about his head!). They immediately put a neck brace on him, and told us that we should have called an ambulance! (Apparently, if your child falls more than twice their height, you should keep them still and call an ambulance...good to know!).

They took us to a trauma room and hooked him up to a monitor and we saw two doctors immediately. Once they saw that his vital signs were all stable, they moved us to a different room (I think they also had a helicopter coming in and needed the room) while we waited to go to radiology for an Xray of his neck. They were not as concerned about his head, and told us just to watch to make sure he was acting normal.

We had to wait a while for radiology, and Evan was quite uncomfortable in the neck brace. He kept saying, "I want to take this off", and "This is squishing my ears!!". Once, he was sitting on my lap and yelled, "Somebody please HELP ME!" There was a big letter "B" on the wall, and he asked, "Are we in Room B? I want to go to Room A!" He was quite an entertaining little patient!

We finally headed to Xray where they took five different shots of his neck. He was such a big boy and was perfectly still for his pictures! For one he had to lay on his back and open his mouth as wide as he could--I bet he was the most compliant two-year-old they have ever seen!

We waited just a while longer to hear that the Xrays looked good. By then, we had been there for more than three hours, and he was acting completely normal. We kept asking him "Where are we?", "Why are we here?", "Where is Bubba Adam?". He would answer correctly every time...."We are at the doctor.", "I step on the stairs and fall on your van.", "Bubba's at TaTa's house". We were feeling comfortable that he did not have a serious head injury, so they sent us home with instructions to just watch him and return if we had any concerns.

I am so thankful that he is OK, and that my van was in just the right spot to cushion his fall. I'll live with the big dent in the hood as a reminder of God's protection for us! This week, my Dad is building me a box to put over those stairs (I've actually been meaning to have him do that since we moved in 5 years ago!), and Evan has promised to never go into the attic again. "It's dangerous!" he says.

"This is squishing my ears!"

Walking with Daddy to Radiology
Waiting in Radiology

They brought us a Spiderman coloring book to pass the time.

Yathttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17932588791927854860noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4105594382515340060.post-52384963779004774472009-03-24T13:40:00.000-07:002009-03-24T13:45:03.956-07:00Please Pray for Mary-KaylinPlease pray for my sweet niece Mary-Kaylin Linch. She is my sister's youngest child, and was diagnosed with a brain tumor on Friday. Avie has done a great job updating her blog with details.....click on the link to The Hardin Family blog to the left to see her posts.

Will you please pray for healing for Mary-Kaylin? After two hours with Adam, her face was grim...."I'm very concerned.....I could be a piece of furniture in this room and he wouldn’t know the difference…..I'm not going to call it Autism today, but I'm pretty sure.....he meets all the criteria.....he will be high functioning, but needs to be in a developmental preschool.....PT, OT, Speech Therapy......immediately." Then she patted me on the leg with a sympathetic look-- "You're a good Mommy," she said.

Adam had just turned two, and Jeff and I had become very concerned about him. His language skills were not developing, and he had even lost some words. He played mostly by himself, did not interact with his siblings, made little to no eye contact, and would not respond to his name. He was sensitive to loud, noisy environments, and had also developed some worrisome behaviors like circling, finger posturing, and staring spells. Despite our concerns, we were not prepared to hear those words.

I'm a "fixer" by nature, so I immediately kicked into high gear. My first plan of action--we must pray. I sent a long list of specific prayer requests to my closest "prayer warrior" friends and family, and the praying began...and God immediately began to answer. Jeff and I decided to try a very low dose of the medication that the physician had suggested and almost immediately saw a significant improvement in Adam's awareness. Within a few short weeks, Adam & Evan both had placement at The Frances Allen School--Adam in a “day-habilitation” spot, and Evan in a “daycare” spot. By the middle of September they had completed their evaluations and Adam began a regimen of Speech, Occupational, and Developmental Therapy.

Now, 6 months later, Adam is a different child. He has made such amazing progress in his language and social skills that I can't even express it in words. We returned to DDC this week to meet with their autism specialists, and were not surprised that the news this time was quite different. After 3 hours of testing and evaluation, the team sat down and confirmed--Adam no longer meets the criteria for Autism; in fact, they would not even place him on the autism spectrum at all at this point! How amazing is that??!! The physician called him "a bit of a head scratcher"--I call him a product of prayer!

Adam still has a ways to go. He is still delayed in some areas, and continues to have some of those behaviors that are concerning. They are sending us to one last specialist--a geneticist--to rule out a few other possibilities, and will continue to follow him every 4-6 months. In the meantime, they just told us to keep up what we were doing because it seems to be working! So we will continue our OT, Speech, Developmental Therapy.....but most importantly, we'll keep praying for God's amazing grace to cover us and to mold Adam into the little man that He has created him to be.

I can't tell you how thankful I am for our precious friends and family who have prayed us through the last 6 months. I'm in constant awe of God's provision for our family. We serve a truly awesome creator. I'm reminded every day as I watch all four of my children grow that He has a plan for each them—it may not be the plan we envisioned, but it is a perfect plan!Yathttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17932588791927854860noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4105594382515340060.post-16190921500059188182009-02-02T18:52:00.000-08:002009-02-02T19:08:36.504-08:0039 and Holding!Today was a great day thanks to all the wonderful Birthday wishes from sweet friends and family! Jeff was the first to wish me Happy Birthday, followed by sloppy birthday kisses from four sweet kids. Evan was a little disappointed that it wasn't HIS birthday, but was happy to hear that his birthday was coming up in June. "OK", he said, "You get my birthday for me in June?" When I mentioned that I was 39 and said, "This is my LAST birthday", Ethan got real serious and asked, "Are you gonna die?" (Wrong thing to say to a six year-old!)

My entire staff crammed into my office at 9 a.m. to sing Happy Birthday to me! (They are the best!) Tonight, we had dinner at The Olive Garden, and then went to my Mom & Dad's for cake. Ethan and Emma picked out the cutest rubber duckie PJs for me (I can't wait to wear them!), and Jeff got me a digital picture frame. A perfect way to celebrate my LAST birthday!Yathttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17932588791927854860noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4105594382515340060.post-4717558249158234242009-01-15T21:44:00.000-08:002009-01-18T20:46:21.387-08:00Keep your eyes on Jesus!I got this E-mail from Ethan's teacher today. She tells that he would say in a sweet little boy voice, "He came....he came....he really came!" There is not much that I love more than the sight of my kids, full of excitement, on Christmas morning. This year was no exception. Emma, as usual, was the first one up....at 5:30 a.m. (which, by the way, is a little late for her!). Jeff & I had only been asleep for a couple of hours, so we sent her back to bed. She came back at 6:30 and couldn't stand it any longer! The babies were still sleeping, and we decided to let them sleep a while longer. We headed downstairs and, believe it or not, Santa had come to the Johnson house in full force! Emma & Ethan checked out their Santa gifts and opened stockings--it was nice to have some time alone with them before the two-year-olds entered the scene! For Emma, there was a new bike (she keeps outgrowing them!). For Ethan, Santa brought Star Wars galore....a "command center" tent, blaster game, and action figures.

We finally woke Adam & Evan up a little later, and they came in all sleepy eyed and not sure what was going on. It didn't take long, however, for them to realize that Santa had come and there were more gifts to be opened! When we went to see Santa at the mall, Evan had asked him for an airplane. By Christmas morning, we had opened presents at several different events and every time Evan, a little confused, would ask, "Where's my airplane?" He was excited to FINALLY get the airplane that he had asked for! Adam, our Buzz Lightyear fan, had asked for a Rocket Ship, and Santa delivered the best rocket ship ever!!

They must have been very good kids this year because Santa was very good to all of them! We had breakfast, but first, true to our Johnson Family Tradition, we sang Happy Birthday to Jesus, and blew out candles on our biscuits & jelly! It was a great Christmas morning!!

James Jr. (Jeff's brother), Sherry, and the Johnson Boy's (Korey, Garrett, & Noah) came around Noon--we had a great lunch with them and the kids had fun playing with all of their new toys. It has been a long time since we have gotten to spend Christmas with them and it was really nice and relaxing.

That night, Jeff and I fell into bed exhausted from the lack of sleep and constant activity of the past several days. It was worth it all though, just to be with our family and to celebrate God's amazing gift to all of us.

Emma's new iPod. This year, she finally did it, and has named this her "Crown Him King" tree. The pictures don't do it justice - it was beautiful! Many of the ornaments she just had to print from her computer or make herself. Sadly, it is difficult to find ornaments related to Christ at Christmas! TaTa remarked, "I could find plenty of Hannah Montana ornaments!". It is sad but true! On Christmas Eve, Ta Ta gathered all of her kids around the Crown Him King tree to talk about what each ornament represented, and to say a prayer thanking God for sending his Son to earth. Evan has quite a shot! Adam is not as interested--he likes to throw the ball, but not necessarily towards the goal. If you watch the video you'll see Evan trying to give him a few tips. As Adam throws the ball into the kitchen, Evan says, "Not that say....silly boy!". We may have a future basketball coach in the family! Thank you TaTa & PaPa for the fun gift. Now I can't wait until spring so it can go OUTSIDE!

P.S. Notice we were playing "dress-up basketball". We've been home for so long we have played with every toy in the house (including the new ones)--we even pulled out the Woody & Buzz costumes this afternoon. It is time to go back to school!!Emma has beenbeging to go back.

OOPS! Haven't been able to get video to post...still trying. It may be too big.Yathttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17932588791927854860noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4105594382515340060.post-85312364797515568242008-12-27T13:32:00.000-08:002008-12-27T14:27:43.051-08:00Catching Up......again!
Obviously I'm not that great at blogging.....I swear I'm going to do better in 2009. I know it is already past Christmas, but I wanted to start with a quick look at our November:

Early November
Jeff went in to check on the boys before we headed to bed and found them both sleeping soundly, although Adam had obviously taken some time before falling asleep to undress himself from the waist down! One of his Occupational Therapy goals right now is dressing/undressing himself, so I'm sure he was just practicing!

This is just a glimpse of our daily lives....every day one of the four come up with some equally as interesting new experiment. This day, it was sleeping naked....tomorrow will be something totally new and exciting!

Evan was sleeping soundly....fully dressed.

November 20th
Ethan's Kindergarten class celebrated Thanksgiving with a huge feast with all 4 Kindergarten classes. They even had a visit from a real live Pilgrim! I love party days at school--it always makes me so thankful that God did not chose to make me a teacher.....and even more thankful for those that He did!

This is the Turkey that Ethan's class made together. I think that TaTa did, so I'll have to get her to share with me. We had a great Thanksgiving dinner at TaTa & PaPa's house. TaTa makes the best dressing (PaPa always cooks the cornbread for her)--there is no place I'd rather be on Thanksgiving than with my family.

Day After Thanksgiving:
I have not ventured out on "Black Friday" in a while, but this year I decided to get up early and see what kind of bargains I could find. I started out at Target (it was CRAZY) and also hit Wal-Mart, Best Buy, and Toys-R-Us. It has also been a long time since I've been shopping by myself so it was nice! I got a good start on my Christmas shopping, and even picked up my own Christmas present--a new camera at Best Buy!! All of my post-Thanksgiving pictures are on the new camera, which I haven't hooked up to the computer yet, so I'll have to do that before I can continue my blogging. Check back because my goal is to be completely caught up before this weekend is over!Yathttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17932588791927854860noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4105594382515340060.post-54237199048575355582008-11-16T20:37:00.000-08:002008-11-17T07:12:31.464-08:00Playing Catch-upOK, so I've not done very well keeping up with my blogging. Last year, I swore we had had our last BIG birthday celebration, and this year we were just going to have a few friends sleep over. Well, our little sleepover ended up being a 24 hour celebration, but I have to say it was one of the best days ever. We had such fun and couldn't have asked for better weather or better kids to hang out with. Emma is blessed with a group of super sweet friends who made her Birthday extra special! Here are a few highlights from our day:

Wish I had a picture, but Jeff picked up Emma & Karmyn from school and had the windows of the van painted with "Happy Birthday, Emma". She loved it!

The rest of the crew arrived by 6 p.m., and we headed to the Arkansas Children's Theatre to see Junie B. Jones and a Little Monkey Business. First, the girls showed out with a little "monkey business" of their own:

Emma was sweet to let her little brother tag along!

After the show, we had a late dinner at Buffalo Grill (it really is our favorite!).
Mal Mal stopped by to wish Emma a Happy Birthday.
Is Emma taller than Mal Mal now? The boys LOVED the airplanes, but you'll see from the pictures that Adam & Evan didn't quite make it all of the way through. Emma's team is playing in a tournament at Burns Park, and won their first game 3-0. I had stayed home with the boys so I missed it, but Jeff said the girls were over the top with excitement. Hopefully that taste of a win will motivate them to always play as hard as they did this morning!

The afternoon game did not go quite as well. After a few bad calls by the ref a couple of the parents were a little upset. The ref ended up throwing ALL of the parents out of the game!! It was really ridiculous, and we didn't end up leaving, but we did all have to move back about 20 feet and watched the rest of the game from the sidewalk. The girls ended up losing the game 0-3, although they didn't seem that upset that all of their parents had been kicked out. In fact, they seemed to think it was pretty funny. I think they were laughing at us as we were packing up to move. I'm also pretty sure that we are out of the running for the "Fair Play" award--ho well! The funniest part to me was that Jeff couldn't wait to call his brother to tell him that he had been thrown out of a soccer game!! James Jr. was so proud!!Yathttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17932588791927854860noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4105594382515340060.post-33663150624956816442008-10-28T19:43:00.000-07:002008-10-28T20:32:59.922-07:00Adam's MRI & EEGAdam had an EEG & MRI done at ACH on Monday. He did really well. We did the EEG first, and Adam DID NOT like it at all....they glued 24 wires to his head and he cried the whole time with Jeff holding him still. Then, she said, "OK, now I need him to go to sleep". Jeff and I just looked at each other, both thinking, "There is no way he is going to go to sleep after that!" Jeff stayed in the room and laid down on the bed with him while I waited outside and started praying. I also called my Mom to ask her to pray that he would settle down and go to sleep. After about 5 minutes I could tell he had stopped crying, then 15 minutes later the tech came out and they were done! The power of prayer!

I had a meeting at work that I had go to so I left for a while and got back just as they were starting the MRI. They already had him sedated and in the machine. Jeff said that he did pretty good, although he DID NOT want to put on the hospital pajamas (I don't blame him...they were a little itchy!). The nurse gave him about 50 stickers which seemed to have made him happy. He went to sleep with a death grip on them! The MRI just took about 20 minutes, and Jeff carried him back to a little recovery area where he slept for about 15 more minutes before we started trying to wake him up. He did not want to wake up at first, even after a cold wet washcloth on his head. Then the nurse put a little bag of Teddy Grahams in his hand--his eyes immediately popped open and he started stuffing them in his mouth!! Poor baby had not eaten since 6:30 a.m. and was starving! He ate two bags of Teddy Grahams in about 5 minutes. Jeff and I were laughing at him--Adam is definitely one who is motivated by food! We stayed for about 10 more minutes and headed home. Adam was feeling really good and quite silly after his little dose of medicine. He stumbled around for a little while and was completly back to his fun little self in no time at all. Kids are so amazing....if I had been through what he had I would have headed straight for the bed!

Now the good news.....thanks to my colleague (Medical Record Director) at ACH, I already have the results of the MRI and it was NORMAL! Praise God! We really did not expect them to find anything, but we are happy for this confirmation that we are on the right track. We should have the results of the EEG by Thursday, but again I expect that it will be completely normal.

I must say, anytime that I am feeling down about what Adam is facing, I need make a visit to Arkansas Children's Hospital. Jeff and were again reminded as we walked the halls at ACH how blessed we are to have four healthy children, and although we know that Adam has some challenges ahead of him, this pales in comparison to what some families are facing.

Thank you to all who are praying for Adam and for our family. We truly feel God's hand at work sustaining us through each day.Yathttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17932588791927854860noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4105594382515340060.post-79017136873173164922008-10-23T22:19:00.000-07:002008-10-23T22:48:43.575-07:00Music to my Ears!October is always a busy month, and obviously I am behind with my updates, but I wanted to share a wonderful moment that I experienced last week.

One night last week Evan and I were playing Hide & Seek in our room. Actually, he was just hiding behind the curtains and would come out squealing when I would ask, "Where did Evan go?", and of course I would appear absolutly astonished and surprised at his magical appearance! After a while, Adam decided to come in to join us. I was so amazed because generally he does not join in when we are playing and avoids this type of chaos. However, this night he came right in and began hiding with Evan, and joined in the squealing when it was time to reveal themselves. We had a ball! Then, even more amazing, Adam went to the bedroom door and turned around and said, "Come on, Bubba". (It wasn't quite that clear, but I could tell from his gestures what he was saying). He wanted Evan to come with him! I got so excited I said, "Evan, Bubba wants you...go, go, go!!" Evan followed him and Adam shut the door behind them. After a few seconds, he opened the door and they both came running back in--Adam squealing and Evan yelling, "We're home!". I was thrilled!

You may wonder why this small game was so exciting to me. As a Mom of twin boys, I've had this vision of them being best buddies and playmates. Until that moment I have never really seen them playing together. It was also the first time that I have seen Adam initiate play of any kind. Those three little words...."Come on, Bubba"....were truly music to my ears. A glimmer of hope, and the best game of Hide & Seek I've ever played!Yathttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17932588791927854860noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4105594382515340060.post-54225503122987575872008-10-11T21:03:00.000-07:002008-10-11T22:42:52.958-07:0015 Years
October 9, 1993

Now
Jeff & I celebrated our 15th anniversary on Thursday (October 9th). Actually, between work, school, soccer, and taekwondo, we barely saw each other on Thursday. We did celebrate Friday night with dinner at Cajun's Wharf and then on to The Rep to see Les Mis. It was so nice to have dinner without having to cut up four plates of food or cleaning up the floor before leaving! The show was the best we've ever seen. Seriously, it was even better than most that we've seen on Broadway!

How about those then & now pics? I think we've done pretty good! I truly can not believe that it's been 15 years since we started our life together. It has been an incredible journey, and I can't imagine spending my life with anyone but Jeff Johnson. Mal called to see if they could interview Adam & me, and of course we were happy to help! (Anything to be on TV, right?) They came to the school and taped the interview on the playground. You can watch it here:

http://arkansasmatters.com/media_player.php?media_id=123041

Adam was a little afraid and didn't want me to let him down. He did let me put him in the swing, and they got a cute shot of Evan pushing him. Evan, of course, was hamming it up for the camera. He would slide down the slide and look at the camera to say, "Want me to do it again?". Then he would throw the ball to me and turn to the camera and say, "I throw the ball to my Mommy!"

I told the reporter as we were leaving to try to make me sound halfway intelligent, and I think the piece turned out really good! I told Jeff I only wish I hadn't used the word "devastated". We know what devastated feels like, and compared to that, this challenge with Adam is so do-able. If I had to do it over again, I would say this is difficult, or maybe challenging, but definitely not devastating.

Adam, by the way, is doing great. We continue to see progress daily, and are amazed at how far he has come in such a short time. Every day we are hearing new words (today's new word was "helment"--he was playing with a Star Wars toy), and he is making much better eye contact. This weekend during Emma's soccer game, he was playing Ring Around the Rosie with Evan and some of the other siblings and having a ball. Amazing! Two months ago he wouldn't have cared to participate.

Last week we saw a Neurologist at ACH who said she does not see any evidence of a neurological disorder, but wants us to go ahead and do an EEG and an MRI (under sedation) just to rule things out, so we are working on getting that scheduled. She was a little concerned about the tone of his legs and his "toe walking" and wants Frances Allen to go ahead and do a PT evaluation--they will be doing that this week.

Today, he moved to a new room at school so that he and Evan are separated to help encourage him to be a little more independent since Evan tends to do most of his talking for him. (I think Evan tends to do the talking for most of the class.) His new teachers went on and on about how great he did and how sweet he is--they love him already!

We continue to be amazed at God's provision for our family. Thank you to all who are praying for us, and please keep Adam and his continued progress in your prayers. We do have a long way to go, but as Jeff's Dad used to say, "This is a starting point. We can get there from here".

Yathttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17932588791927854860noreply@blogger.com0
